How much are your
dollars or won worth?

Convert amounts, estimate exchange costs and check gains on dollars you hold. Confirm the final customer rate with your bank or broker.

1 USD = 1,342.00 KRW

Data date:

Versus previous stored trading day (2026-10-05): -0.40 KRW / -0.03%

Korea Investment & Securities (KIS) · KRW per 1 USD · Not a live quote or bank reference rate.

Calculation inputs

Reset

Always enter KRW per 1 USD. Use a customer rate for conversion or gains, and a reference assumption for cost estimates.

Exchange costs

Editable defaults of 1.75% and 90% are examples, not bank terms. The same spread and discount apply to buying and selling in this model; separate charges are excluded.

Currency gain or loss

Enter the dollars held. Do not count spreads already included in customer rates again as charges. A stored selling rate gives a reference valuation, not an actual sale result.

The terms matter
as much as the rate.

01

A quoted rate is not necessarily your customer rate

Stored daily quotes differ from bank customer rates. Check cash versus transfer rates and discounts, and compare final rates and amounts received.

02

A 90% discount does not reduce the exchange rate by 90%

The discount reduces the eligible spread. With an assumed 1.75% spread and 90% discount, 1.75% × (1 − 0.90) = 0.175% remains. Equal discounts do not mean equal costs when base spreads differ.

03

Consider both buying and selling costs

Buying at 1,424 KRW and selling at 1,376 KRW loses 48 KRW per dollar. Break-even depends on the actual selling rate, not merely a rise in the reference rate. Without separate charges, sell at 1,424 KRW or more.

Example: exchange 1,000 USD in both directions at an unchanged reference rate

Buying rate
1,424 KRW / USD
Selling rate
1,376 KRW / USD
Round-trip loss
48,000 KRW

Ordinary personal exchange gains are generally outside Korean income tax

Under the cited Korean tax interpretation, ordinary exchange gains of non-business individual Korean residents are outside taxable income. Foreign-currency deposit interest is taxed separately. Overseas share gains include KRW conversion effects. Business transactions and derivatives follow separate rules.

05

Account exchange can still carry a cash withdrawal charge

Withdrawing exchanged currency as banknotes may add a fee. For travel cash, compare exchange and withdrawal costs together. Consider storage and loss risks.

More things to check

When does automatic exchange for a KRW stock order occur?

Brokers may use different conversion times, rates and discounts. Check provisional conversion, later settlement and the final exchange record.

Source / guidance

Is exchanging in installments always better?

You can spread exchanges across several dates, but this does not guarantee a better average rate or profit. Consider spending dates for travel and funding schedules for investing.

How much currency can I carry when traveling?

When entering Korea, declare covered payment instruments including KRW, foreign currency and checks totaling more than USD 10,000 equivalent. Departure procedures may depend on residence status and purpose. Check Customs guidance. Income taxation and currency reporting are separate matters.

How the calculation works

USD → KRW = amount × rate; KRW → USD = amount ÷ rate. Gain/loss = dollars × selling rate − sale charges − (dollars × buying rate + purchase charges). Cost mode adds the remaining spread for buying and subtracts it for selling.
